Lighting - There are many different types of lighting, these are split up into many different categories due to what they are used for, or how they look etc. Lighting is sometimes used to draw the audiences attention to an object, persons emotion or gesture for example when someone is looking up at something then top lighting may be used etc. To create this light could mean the use of daylight or artificial light such as a lamp/torch etc.

Under Lighting - Under-lighting is where a light is placed under someones face making the background look dark, this also shows any crevices on someones face as shadows appear. Top Lighting -  Top- lighting is where a light is placed above someones face however this can be natural daylight or artificial light unlike under lighting. This is used inn order to signify something such as something scary or interesting in the sky or it could just be a sunny day with a clear sky.

Back Lighting - A back lighting shot is usually showing a light from behind something/ someone, these shots often show something/ someones silhouette as the purpose of the use of lighting is to get the audience to focus on something specific.

Film Genres-
Back Lighting - is usually used within Thrillers/Horror films.
Under Lighting - is usually used within Horror films.
Top Lighting - is usually used in  Sci-Fi/Romance or Comedy films.

Low key Lighting - Low key lighting is used to heighten the sense of alienation felt by the audience. This is done simply by the low key lighting  being able to only allow a little light to be shown within the shot. They are also used to convey different atmospheres and moods within scenes and shots.

High Key Lighting - High key lighting is usually used to portray a more up beat mood such as a sunny day. Furthermore it can be used for daylight and night scenes as it creates a lower contrasting difference between shadows and brighter areas.

Natural Lighting - Natural lighting is where no artificial light has been used to increase/decrease the intensity of the shot/ scene so natural daylight is used within the scene/shot.

  1. Relande, a clear understanding of the differences between types of lighting and how lighting is used to represent different characters, such as the antagonist and the protagonist.

    To improve;

    Develop your understanding with further discussion on each of the examples which you have provided. Explain how they are used to create different meanings.

    Include more thriller specific examples, such as discussing why top lighting is used in the scream images and what response this could evoke from the audience.
